Abstract

Spanish Abstract: El artículo describe las características de las prácticas de piedad, definidas como todas las actividades devocionales externas y privadas que contribuyen a fortalecer la vida religiosa hispanoamericana en la temprana edad moderna. Estas prácticas eran realizadas fuera de las ceremonias litúrgicas. Entre las posibles distinciones en el culto cristiano, el artículo considera las devociones a Cristo (latría), a la Santísima Virgen (hiperdulía) y a los Santos (dulía).

English Abstract: The article describes characteristics regarding the practices of piety, defined as all external and private practices that contribute to strengthen religious life of the Spanish Indies in the early modern age. These practices were performed outside the liturgical ceremonies. Among the different possible classifications, this article considers the devotions to Christ (latria), to the Holy Virgin (hiperdulia), and to the Saints (dulia).
