Abstract

This discussion paper considers whether the relationship between cryptocurrencies and the traditional banking system need be as segregated or antagonistic, and whether in fact traditional banks may deploy blockchain-based coins of their own. Citing the recent release of JP Morgan’s JPM Coin, the paper argues that there is in fact room for a degree synergy or complementarity between the traditional banking system and the comparatively novel asset class of cryptocurrencies.
