Abstract

From a contemporary standpoint, free speech debates seem to pit progressives and radicals against conservative or mainstream liberals. But that dichotomy mischaracterizes not only the history of free speech controversies but also the actual arguments at stake today.

Keywords: free speech, First Amendment, democracy, human rights, racism, discrimination
