Abstract
Worldwide trend towards the use of natural plant remedies has created an enormous need for information about the properties and uses of medicinal plant as antitumor, antianalgesic, insecticides. Besides medicines, plants provides thousands of novel compounds, such as fragrance, flavorings, dyes, fibers, food, beverages, etc. Rose flowers are beautiful having exquisite shape, size, diverse colours with delightful fragrance. Rose is the best cut flowers and as such is in great demand in both domestic as well as in international markets. It is reported to possess anticancer, anti-aging, laxative/purgative, hypolipidemic, antidiabetic, antibacterial and antimicrobial activities. The present study was undertaken to analyse the nutrient composition, Phytonutrient constituents and antioxidant activity of the dried Rose petals. The Nutrients namely Carbohydrate, Protein, Fat, Moisture, Ash, Crude Fiber, Calcium, Iron and Vitamin C was estimated in the dried Rose petals powder by standard procedures. Preliminary qualitative phytochemical analysis was carried out by standard procedures to identify the secondary metabolites like alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, phenols, glycosides, carbohydrates, tannins, steroids and terpenoids present in the different solvent extracts of dried Rose petals powder. Tests were done in triplicates and interpretation was made. DPPH method was used to find the antioxidant activity. Nutrient composition of the dried rose petals powder 84.5% of moisture, 0.4g of ash, 70.4g of carbohydrate, 0.5 g of protein, 0.2g of fat,1.2g of crude fibre, 0.2mg of Vitamin C, 3.7mg of Iron and 120mg of Calcium. Rose petals powder had high quality of phytochemicals and antioxidant activity.
