Abstract

We present a dynamic and adaptive system for automation of traffic signal control using image processing. This system adapts to the on-time demand of the traffic. The control of the traffic signals is based on the traffic analysis of vehicle density on the lanes at the junction using Image processing. We have designed an algorithm to take decision regarding the timing of the traffic signals by analyzing the vehicle density. Also, we discuss a synchronous mode of our system in which two or more junctions are linked together through a server setup and the signal durations for each linked node is based on the combined traffic analysis of all the junctions. The analysis involves the use of our designed algorithm which is developed to generate optimized result applicable for all the junctions. The system we present reduces the chances of human error by minimizing the human interference.
