Abstract

This discussion paper expands upon the “leisured” aspect of blockchain technologies by considering the growth of gambling activities on blockchain platforms, therein also cautioning for greater regulatory and accountability structures to circumscribe such activities. The findings of the paper suggest that, while the social participation in gambling does have a recreational aspect, this feature is outweighed by the risks of illicit activity that can be perpetuated on blockchains, therein wielding a damaging effect on the overall reputation of the space.
