Abstract

We build upon the dynamic programming model of ice hockey by Asness and Brown by making two modifications. First, we take into account the starting state of the game. Secondly, the goalie can only be substituted back into the game during the next face-off. Our results show that state matters: the optimal time for pulling the goalie is a full three minutes earlier or with just ten seconds left depending on state. Based on our model, we expand on the insights given by Asness and Brown.
