Abstract
Children have unique physical, psychological, mental and emotional characteristics which make them especially vulnerable. This paper considers the capacity for children to consent to participate in research, and the regulatory history of this issue. The authors argue that, as long as their rights and interests are properly secured, children need to be involved in research in order to promote their health and well-being.
