This study aims to estimate the spillover effects resulting from a remarkable increase in tourism flows in Japan, and to investigate the impact of territorial resources on regional economic growth. Main results confirm the existence of both economic and tourism spillover effects; more precisely, two spatial econometric models suggest the importance of infrastructure networks, natural parks and museums. Furthermore, in contrast with prior studies, a positive correlation between economic growth and the endowment in natural resources is found. Lastly, for the first time in this kind of researches, international conferences are shown to have a positive impact on tourists stays. However, efforts for reinvigorating economy through tourism development and investment deserve a careful evaluation: although an overall increase of tourists, lights and shadows are found at territorial level, inter alia an overwhelming concentration of travellers in the widely known destinations.
