The Influence of Length on the Structure of a Swirling Flow in an Isothermal Burner

This paper presents a numerical study of an isothermal swirling flow in a cylindrical chamber; the purpose of this study is to show the influence of length reduction in an axisymmetric configuration on the average characteristics of the flow structure. The calculation results are valid for a low intensity of Swirl number(S = 0.45).The parameters measurements are made by a hot-wire anemometer at different longitudinal stations, we used the numerical approach RANS accompanied by the CFD method based on the three models with turbulent viscosity :( k - ε realizable (RKE) .k - ε RNG and SST k-ω (SST)). The numerical results confrontation showed that the length reduction of the confinement up to 20% does not change the flow structure especially in the central recirculation zone generated by the presence of the swirl. This result is a very interesting result because it will reduce the calculation execution time, which will make the simulation of large structures possible (Hybrid RANS-LES or LES) which is being treated in real time.
