Abstract

The IEEE 802.16 standard known as WiMAX (World Wide Interoperability for Micro Waves Access) is a wireless technology for the transmission of data over a long distance at high speeds, contrary to the IEEE 802.11 standard of WIFI which is a wireless network covering a radius of tens of meters and tolerating a mobility at very low speed without forgetting the problems related to the security of communication. In this paper,we did a study on the WiMAX network and we compared it with WIFI network. The simulation tool used in our study is OPNET 14.5 which is software for modeling and simulating telecommunication networks.

Our simulation results show the robustness of WiMAX in front of the WIFI, regarding the throughput, the delay and the loading, also the WiMAX presents a network where the data dropped are almost null, which makes the WiMAX a very useful network and asked especially in the isolated areas (the desert, the ocean, the mountains ... etc), so the WiMAX technology is an essential complement to ADSL.
