Abstract

Cyber Insurance protects businesses and individuals from internet-based risks. A data breach is a nightmare. Lawyers need to understand cyber insurance to protect clients and their own law firms. Law firms have a special exposure when hacked because of client files with personal and other sensitive information.

Traditional liability products do not address internet exposure. The standard commercial general liability policy excludes data related liability. Cyber liability policies are unique. A few companies offering cyber insurance are AIG,The Hartford, Zurich & Travelers.

Computer-specific policies provide specific grants of coverage. These policies limit coverage to bad acts of persons who are not authorized to use the computer and therefore exclude acts by employees.

Law firms are prime targets for cyber crimes. It is your data that cyber criminals and hackers want.Training is needed to avoid negligent handling of documents by attorneys and employees that can compromise a case in disclosing confidential information.
