This paper aims to provide a brief history of research into the relationship between legal and linguistic inquiry in the United States. The title may be a bit misleading, since “legal linguistics” is a term used more in Europe than in North America. Yet the term seems to me to capture the breadth of interaction between the ways we govern ourselves under a system of rules and principles on the one hand, and the ways in which we communicate those rules and principles through our knowledge of language and our knowledge of how to use our knowledge of language.
