Abstract

English Abstract: The article is a critical analysis of Ivo Žanić's book "Croatian on probation", and its main topic is language policy in the former Yugoslavia and in the EU. Was language policy in the former Yugoslavia unitarian and were language laws undemocratic? The article shows that the author of the book is silent on many important data on the subject. It also shows that he has failed to apply knowledge of the role of prestige in relations between languages or between variants. The article demonstrates the limits of legal provisions on language: laws, even when maximally democratic, cannot make small languages big or vice versa, and cannot change the difference in prestige between them. The article cites objective inequalities between languages or between variants in the EU. Features of polycentric standard languages are also described, using as example English, German and Spanish, and various inaccurate Žanić's claims about the languages mentioned have been corrected.
