Abstract

English Abstract: This critical analysis of the book "Croatian as a Historical Language" by Marko Samardžija shows that Samardžija uses the term "historical language" by hiding data from the works of the founder of the term, Eugen Coseriu, on the basis of which it would be seen that Coseriu's term is applicable to polycentric languages and that Coseriu himself explicitly mentions the Serbo-Croatian language. Furthermore, Samardžija is shown to be misusing the term "linguistic community" when referring to the distant past, and to substantially truncate information when describing the introduction of Štokavian as a standard language, thus leading readers to erroneous conclusions. It is also shown that all the information about the first Yugoslavia that Samardžija offers in the book contradicts his claim that linguistic unitarism prevailed at that time.
