Abstract

Serbo-Croatian Abstract: Članak je kritička analiza teksta Hrvatske akademije znanosti i umjetnosti pod naslovom "Hrvatski jezik" (objavljenog u časopisu "Jezik" br. 2, 2007, str. 41-50).

English Abstract: The article is a critical analysis of a text by the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, entitled "Croatian Language" (published in the journal "Jezik" No. 2, 2007, pp. 41-50). On the basis of extensive linguistic literature, the article shows insufficient knowledge of HAZU members in sociolinguistic theory about polycentric languages, then in the process of nation-making, and in European history of the 18th and 19th centuries. There are also a number of contradictions in the claims made by academics about the Illyrian movement, as well as the suppression of data when talking about linguistic unitarism and the Novi Sad agreement. The process of creating a moral panic that academics use to justify their own linguistic purism is revealed. The article also talks about identity variability, and rewriting historical sources using the latest translation of Bartol Kašić's book. The official language is also discussed.
