Abstract

English Abstract: This article critically analyzes a text by Ivo Pranjković. It discusses the basic properties of a standard language, then the characteristics of a polycentric language and the criteria for determining whether it is one or several languages. Examples are used from German, Malay and other languages. It also talks about the name of the language, and about the unscientific nature of prescriptivism and of identifying the nation with the language.
