Abstract

English Abstract: Critically analyzing texts authored by Stjepan Babić, Leopold Auburger, Stjepan Damjanović and Vinko Grubišić, this article argues, on the basis of extensive linguistic literature, that there are no pure languages and that purism is the opposite of a scientific approach to language. Furthermore, the article discusses the way nations were formed in the South Slavic area. The theory of polycentric languages and the relationship between national variants are described and examples from English, German, Dutch, and Hindustani are cited. The independence of sociolinguistics from politics and the sociolinguistic criteria for determining whether it is a single or several languages are also discussed.
