Abstract

English Abstract: Critically analyzing a text by Dalibor Brozović, this article demonstrates the inappropriateness of the terms "middle South Slavic language" and "standard New Štokavian" offered by Brozović. Based on parallels with German and English, the article concludes that the Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian and Montenegrin language situation is a typical example of a polycentric standard language with several national variants, and that the designation "Serbo-Croatian" is linguistically based. These insights, however, are not new: Croatian linguists represented them as early as in the 1960s, which can be seen from articles published at that time by, for example, Dalibor Brozović, and cited in this article. Quotations from the same author that deny the thesis of linguistic unitarism are also cited. Additionally, the article discusses today's Croatistic prescriptivism.
