Abstract

English Abstract: The article critically analyzes a text written by Mario Grčević. It explains why the "historically conditioned self-assessment of language speakers" cannot be a scientific criterion and why the Serbo-Croatian linguistic situation cannot be equated with the situation between Czech and Slovak or Bulgarian and Macedonian. It talks about the importance of mutual understanding for determining whether it is a single language or several languages. It explains why the term Ausbau-languages is not applicable to Serbo-Croatian. The name of the language is discussed in more detail.
