Abstract

Conventional method of attendance marking in a classroom, not only adds the logistical overload on a teacher but also consumes a good proportion of the valuable time of both the teacher and students. Also, due to the large strength of students usually present in a classroom, there is a possibility of proxy attendance. Hence, it is really difficult for a lecturer to manually record the actual attendance. This is the reason for growing need of smart and automated attendance registration system in a class room. The focus of this work is to develop a more reliable and user friendly attendance registration system. Here, the face of an individual is used for the purpose of attendance marking. This stems on the fact one of the unique feature of an individual is his face. The face recognition strategy examines the facial features, recognize and match them to one of the many faces in the database. First, faces need to be detected from global image and then, the detected image is recognized and attendance of recognized students are exported to a database. Viola Jones algorithm is used for real time face detection. Face recognition is done by combining Principal Component Analysis (PCA) algorithm.
