Abstract

English Abstract: In this critical analysis of Stjepan Babić's book "Wrestling of the Croatian Language", linguistic unitarism and linguistic equality are elaborated, talking about the Novi Sad agreement, the so-called Orthography Manual of Novi Sad and the common Dictionary of Matica hrvatska and Matica srpska. The conclusion is that they were not guided by unitarism but by equality, and that even the information provided by Stjepan Babić confirms this. The article also talks about positive reports from the Novi Sad meeting and from the meetings of the spelling committee, regularly written by Ljudevit Jonke and published in the Zagreb-based magazine "Jezik". It mantions a positive review of the Orthography Manual of Novi Sad, also written by Ljudevit Jonke and published in "Jezik". It is shown that all this is silenced in the book by Stjepan Babić. As for the description of today's linguistic situation, the book's analysis reveals the author's ignorance of polycentric standard languages and of the situation in German and English. In addition, criticism is given to the author's prescriptive and puristic attitudes towards language.
