The AIR OWL2: An Environment Air Pollution Monitoring System Based on Wireless Sensor Network

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are gaining importance in the area of research, mainly due to their wide potential applications. They contribute and enhance the performances in numerous types of industries as well as in day to day life activities. Moreover, in the modern world, Environmental monitoring has become a crucial area in terms of protection and surveillance. So, an air pollution monitoring system which provides real-time coordination is extremely essential in current environment dynamics. In this study, it is developed an air pollution monitoring system with the application of Wireless Sensor Networks. The innovative system is named as AIR OWL2. Fundamentally the knowledge base of Air Owl1; which is an air quality monitoring device, developed by the India Open Data Association Initiative is used in this study and further, it is developed adding special features. Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) technology is used in developing the system. The new structure is portable and can detect environment temperature, humidity, CO2, CO, SO2, other polluted gases and smoke levels. It is compared along with “AirVisual” which is an air pollution measuring mobile application. When compared with AirVisual mobile application, AIR OWL2 can be modified using a variety of sensors and customize the device depending on the requirement. As the broker “myDevices, the IoT Solutions company” is used to obtain real-time observations. The designed system is executed and tested in the laboratory conditions acquiring expected output. It is expected that AIR OWL2 will be economical and beneficial in many ways as well as provide a significant contribution for air monitoring process and a good knowledge base for further studies related to wireless sensor networks applications.
