Abstract

For a long time, the international law of the sea has only been of peripheral relevance to the European Union. Fisheries, on the other hand, have long been an EU concern (and earlier one for the EC and the EEC). In the last few years, there has been a marked change in the EU's approach to the international law of the sea and the EU has become a more active player in this field. This chapter outlines this development and the role of the law of the sea for the EU and vice versa.
