Individual and Collective Self-Identification as Indigenous in the European Arctic: International Legal Perspectives (La autoidentificación individual y colectiva como indígena en el ártico europeo perspectivas legales internacionales)

Abstract

English Abstract: In many states which are home to indigenous peoples, the question of who and the indigenous people can have important political, legal and economic implications. Special attention is given to self-identification as indigenous. In the European Arctic, indigenous peoples face particular challenges due to different legal definitions in Norway, Finland, Sweden and Russia. This English language article investigates the limits of self-identification in international law from an Arctic perspective.

Spanish Abstract: En muchos estados que albergan a pueblos indígenas, la cuestión de quién es indígena puede tener importantes implicaciones políticas, legales y económicas. Se presta especial atención a la autoidentificación como indígena. En el Ártico europeo, los pueblos indígenas sami se enfrentan a desafíos particulares debido a las diferentes definiciones legales en Noruega, Finlandia, Suecia y Rusia. Este artículo, que está escrito en inglés, investiga el papel y los límites de la autoidentificación en el marco del derecho internacional actual desde una perspectiva ártica.
