Abstract

While still largely ice-covered today, it is estimated that the Central Arctic Ocean (CAO) will be largely ice-free at some time during this century - for the first time in human memory. This will allow new uses for this part of the sea. This in turn will lead to threats to the marine environment. This article investigates some existing mechanisms of international law with a view to their utility in protecting the CAO.
