Abstract
English Abstract: Due to the lack of generally accepted definitions for “artist’s book”, “conceptual book”, “self-published (samizdat) book” in the Russian art history, designating such objects is difficult in museum practice. The article reveals solution to the problem of identification on the basis of the collection “Library of Mikhail Karasik”, preserved in the Saint-Petersburg Literary Museum “XX century”. Here working definitions of the terms are offered and a method — sequence of allocation in the process of the collection’s bibliographic description is presented. Firstly, the books, created by artistic techniques, one hundred units at most or without participation of mass publishers and issuing organizations, were located: handmade and self-published. Next, after clarifying the way of creating, the works were divided into those printed in “ordinary” typographies or by personal printing and/or copying devices and those made in “art publishing houses” and by artists themselves. Further, since this data was not sufficient for identification or it was necessary to verify it, history of the things was restored, creative biography and self-positioning of the authors/artists were retrieved from open resources and over consulting with the creators. By accumulating “formal” and “ideological” information, the fact of solving artistic task in framework of the genre or branch was considered. Thus, five items were characterized as tangible media of publication (self-published books, although among them there are fine press and bibliophile books), two as creations of conceptualism and six as works of art (artists’ books including one cover). Some of the objects are introduced for the first time as well as the majority of authors and/or artists and creators organisations in Russian. Another result of the research owing to things’ provenance clarification is discovering of memorial value of the collection. In conclusion, the paper outlines potential of subsequent study of the “Library”, and thanks for cooperation are expressed.
