Abstract

This chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of EU law on equal treatment in employment. It starts by examining the range of instruments found in EU equal treatment law and their evolution. It then explores the protected characteristics in respect of which discrimination is forbidden. It analyses the definition of discrimination and the exceptions and derogations permitted thereto. The chapter explains the scope for positive action and the mechanisms for the enforcement of the law.
