Abstract

This work provides a basic overview of the significant role of lexicons in search and relevance using examples of functionality supported in a range of LexisNexis product adaptations, including the dual language Canadian products. Functionality covered includes stop words, non-stemming, equivalence, single document retrieval, word wheel suggestions/autocomplete, phrase recognition, graphical view and prompting of answer cards. The work also touches on development, curation and delivery of lexicons for consumption in the app, and provides a feel for the kinds of challenges faced in developing lexicons. The work concludes with a look at ongoing and future enhancement initiatives, including research into search engine re-platforming.

Keywords: lexicons, search relevance, phrase recognition, equivalence, autocomplete, stop words
