Abstract

This chapter attempts an institutional history of music copyright. It seeks to answer three questions: Who lobbied for the statutory protection of music? Which institutional environment resulted? Who were the chief beneficiaries? The focus is on four countries, Britain, Germany, France and the United States, in which the Western copyright regime first took shape. The chapter is a reproduction (with a new introduction) of my first scholarly publication in the field, published in 1998 in the Swiss music journal Dissonanz/Dissonance under the title »Die Mythen des Urhebers: Geistiges Eigentum in der Musik: eine historische Übersicht und Kritik«.

Keywords: copyright, institutional history
