Abstract

Musa balbisiana Colla (Family: Musaceae), available in south Asia and south-east Asia, has been reported to have high medicinal properties. The present study aims to evaluate the antioxidant, antiglycation and glycolytic enzyme inhibitory potential of the hydro-methanolic extract of Musa balbisiana Colla seed (MBS) and its different fractions. The result shows that ethyl acetate fraction has the highest free radical scavenging activity in DPPH, ABTS, FRAP and phosphomolybdenum assay, which is correlated with the high total phenolic and flavonoid content of the fraction. Further, the inhibitory effect of ethyl acetate fraction on the formation of fluorescent Advanced glycation End Products (AGE) was higher than 50% at 100 µg/ml, stronger than the positive control aminoguanidine (48.7%) followed by butanol fraction (44.3%), hydro-methanolic extract (33.8%) and water fraction (15.1%). However, butanol fraction was found to be more potent in inhibiting glycolytic enzyme viz. α-amylase and α-glucosidase with an IC50 value of 6.7 ± 0.37 µg/ml and 20.6 ± 0.64 µg/ml respectively as compared to other fractions. The result obtained suggest that MBS could be used as an easily accessible source of antioxidant and displayed therapeutic potential by inhibiting glycolytic enzyme and protein glycation.
