Abstract

Over four billion people around the globe constitute the world’s poor. These people live outside the formal economy and face unmet needs in basic areas such as healthcare, education, sanitation, financial services, food, and energy. Apart from the above, global issues like depleting natural resources, global warming, pollution, poverty, terrorism etc, need the attention of philosophers, bureaucrats, policy-makers, business enterprises, and various other voluntary organizations. Social entrepreneurship plays a significant role in this regard. Social enterprises consider a specific social issue as the main agenda of their business. These social organizations apply entrepreneurial strategies to their business operations and provide a sustainable solution to the said social problem. These organizations are generally institutionalized and carry all features of a business organization. The social enterprises are economically viable and have been witnessed all across the globe. These enterprises have a vast presence in all spheres of human life. It is interesting to note that the social entrepreneurship construct is under defined in academic research. The research in this domain is in its infancy. The conduct of the present study is an endeavor to review the existing literature and to propose a conceptualization of social entrepreneurship construct. The study also proposes a conceptualized model of antecedents and consequences of social entrepreneurship.
