Abstract

The focus of this paper is to introduce the area of study and the diverse people who were living and co-existing in this geographical location that later came to be known in 1914 as a single political entity called Nigeria. This is done by carefully but briefly describing the people and the socio-political, cultural and economic life of the people as well as their inter group relationship before their contact with the Europeans. It also looks at the systematic process through which the European interest manifested and eventually tricked the people into accepting the deceitful protection treaties as well as the measures of force and bombardment which the colonialist subjugated the peace and tranquility of the people before arriving at the January 1st 1914 Amalgamation of the Southern and Northern Protectorate.
