Abstract
This paper discusses three concepts that undergird Socrates as the archetypal wise man: the appearance and reality distinction, “logos”, and the ignorance and pathos of the “fool”. The game Socrates played was deadly because he provoked the powerful while knowing that the ignorant are invested in the prevailing order. The paper touches on the work of Plato, Xenophon, Seneca and Epictetus as well as the hermetic tradition.
