Abstract

This essay discusses preliminary results from the Center for the Study of Applied Legal Education’s 2019-20 tri-annual survey of clinical legal education. The CSALE Master Survey was completed in fall 2019 by over 94% of law schools and provides information on law clinic and externship program policies, courses, and faculty, noting changes since the last CSALE survey in 2016-17. The paper analyzes trends in the substantive focus of clinics and externships and student demand for those courses. It also reports on the employment status of clinical instructors and on school policies on paid externships and the new ABA experiential training requirement.
