Abstract

The terms Islam and Islamism are intertwined as Islam literally refers to one of the Abrahamic faiths that submits to one God (monotheism) while Islamism in global politics assumes different meaning but often connotes political Islam that is associated with some form of terrorism or violent extremism. In most international fora where they (terrorism and violent extremism) are discussed, both terms usually raise some form of silent suspicions against Muslims. This is referred to as Islamophobia in global politics. Given the importance of religion generally to international peace and security, this narrative ascribed to Islam considered to be a major cause of strained relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims in global affairs. The paper relied on document evidence to trace the historical evolution of the terms. The paper also redefined the terms by linking them to their original meaning. It finally argued that the imperative for peaceful coexistence in global affairs, necessitated the need to clarify these terms so that the right actors are captured in public communications and the messages are received by the public.
