Abstract

This is a critical review of the 2020 documentary Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words. While the film ultimately serves more as propaganda than a documentary, it nevertheless provides valuable insight into the enigma that is Clarence Thomas. This review provides an overview of the film’s depiction of Thomas’s humble upbringing in Savannah, Georgia, his early Catholic education, self-described radicalization in college, and reluctant joining of the Republican Party. Then, the documentary’s one-sided portrayal of the Anita Hill hearing is analyzed. Despite the documentary’s faults, viewers of every political persuasion will gain valuable insight into how life experiences can form judicial philosophies.
