Authenticity is a subject of debate among philosophers and psychologists. In philosophical sense authenticity in the context of human behaviour implies acting in accordance with one’s ‘true self’. Older idea of ‘true self’ was that it is ‘pre-given set of substantive feelings, opinions and desires to be consulted through inward-turning or introspection.’ The recent research argues that our opinions, feelings, desires and values are developed by our experience in the formative age. We discover our inner-self when we build narratives around our stories. In order to remain authentic in every action we need to discover our inner-self and act according to the call of that inner-self. Researchers have explained the traits of authentic leaders, who build an environment of trust and a trust relationship with followers. During adversity, only an authentic leader can lead the team effectively.

This essay discusses authenticity, traits of authentic leaders, how authentic leadership is being practiced and how authentic leadership can be developed. It has explained why an authentic leader can lead during a crisis, irrespective of his leadership style.
