Abstract

We accumulate the scattered pieces of Distributed Ledgers’ history and research in commemoration of the first decade of the literature produced from the advent of Bitcoin. On the grounds of this, this paper provides historical perspectives and inquires what economic elements embedded in cryptocurrencies and blockchains motivated the establishment of this growing area of research. Then, the paper reviews and categorizes the most sig- nificant extant literature. The emphasis is on research methods employed and results delivered relating to the conceptual, theoretical and empirical contributions through the ages that have influenced the chain of evolution of this still uncharted literature.

Keywords: Cryptocurrencies, blockchain, distributed ledgers, literature review, bitcoin
