Abstract

In the present paper, an intensive analysis of simulation of extractive distillation to separate the n-Heptane - Toluene azeotrope has been performed. A literature survey has been performed for extractive distillation. Aspen Plus was been used as the process simulator to simulate the process of extractive distillation (ED) for the n-Heptane-Toluene azeotropic system. Comparison of different entrainers: N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP), Phenol and Sulfolane for separation of this system was done. Sensitivity analysis was carried out to optimize every flowsheet. The total cost measured by the Aspen Process Economic Analyser, along with the amount of the solvent consumed, cost of the solvent and purity obtained during separation process are used as the criteria to determine the best solvent. For the n-Heptane - Toluene system, Sulfolane was found to be the best solvent.
