Perception of Undergraduate Students on the Impact of Siting Higher Institutions in a Community: A Case Study of Federal University Wukari, Taraba State, Nigeria

The study investigated the perception of undergraduate students on the impact of siting higher institutions in a community. A case study of Federal University Wukari, Taraba State, Nigeria. The study employed the use of a descriptive survey. The sample of the study comprised the 600 undergraduate students’ selected through sampling technique and stratified random sampling. A questionnaire was used to collect the data. We used a questionnaire and the questionnaire was validated by two lecturers from the University of Jos. We adopted a test re-test method to determine the reliability of the instrument. Three research question was designed for the study. A total number of 600 undergraduate students’ selected from all the three faculties. The data collected were analyzed using a simple percentage. Result collected revealed that the impact of Federal University Wukari on Wukari community includes employment generation for the people, expansion of social infrastructural facilities, aiding the social-economic development of the people, the attraction of Federal presence to Wukari, production of manpower for the community, the state and the country at large, encouraging the indigenes to appreciate university education, attract international donors and provision of community services to the community. This study also revealed that Federal University Wukari is facing the following challenges inadequate fund, inadequate infrastructural facilities, inadequate lecturers, communal crisis, and inadequate instructional materials. This paper recommends that the federal government and states should establish higher institutions across the country where development has not to reach to stimulate the social-economic development of the community.
