An IoT Based Rapid Detection and Response System for Vehicular Collision with Static Road Infrastructure

Abstract

Road accidents take place everywhere and involve a collision between two dynamic or a dynamic and static object. The proposed project is designed to detect as well as respond to accidents between moving vehicles and stationary road infrastructure such as traffic lights, street lamps etc. The system is consequently installed on this standalone road infrastructure and is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The system uses sound, pressure and motion sensors for detection purposes. The sensors are calibrated using the average values observed in previous accidents as their operating threshold values for detection and determination. They are connected with an Arduino and a Wi-Fi module which communicates with nearby medical facilities and highway authorities as a response mechanism in the event of a detected accident. If implemented, it has the potential to effectively reduce the loss of life and limb in the event of road accidents, especially on isolated highway stretches.
