Abstract

The measurement of L2 proficiency has been recognized as a persistent challenge in the applied linguistics literature. The International Association of Hyperpolyglots (HYPIA) was also beset by the same conundrum, but has sought to address the question through a rigorous membership process. This paper considers the merits of HYPIA’s selection process as part of a sociolinguistic praxis of a not-for-profit organization.

Keywords: polyglot, hyperpolyglot, HYPIA, polyglotism, multilingualism, language acquisition
