Théorie économique et Statistiques : un mariage difficile (Economic Theory and Statistics: A Difficult Marriage)

French Abstract: La publication des premiers travaux input-output de Leontief dans les années 1930 s’inscrit dans ce moment de la science économique qu’Alain Desrosières a décrit dans La politique des grands nombres (1993) comme celui du « mariage tardif » (2000 [1993], p. 200) entre la théorie économique et les observations statistiques. Si ce mariage est tardif c’est que dans bien d’autres disciplines, comme la démographie et la médecine, la méthode statistique a depuis longtemps pénétré le cœur de l’enquête scientifique. Mais, en économie, le « branchement ne va pas de soi » entre théorie et statistique (Ibid.). Il y est difficile de dépasser une polarisation entre d’un côté des approches essentiellement théoriques et déductives qui dominent la pensée économique depuis le 18e siècle et, de l’autre, des approches, plus tardives, où l’enquête de terrain et la manipulation des données statistiques se fait sans ou avec une défiance certaine vis-à-vis de la théorie économique. Nous examinons de manière brève et didactique les grandes lignes des débats sur ce "branchement" entre théorie économique et statistique.

English Abstract: The publication of Leontief's first input-output works in the 1930s is part of this moment in economic science that Alain Desrosières described in "The Politics of Large Numbers, a History of Statistical Reasoning" (1993) as that of “late marriage” (2000 [1993 ], p. 200) between economic theory and statistics. If this marriage came late, it is because in many other disciplines, such as demography and medicine, the statistical method had long since entered the heart of scientific inquiry. But, in economics, the “connection was not obvious” between theory and statistics (Ibid.). It is difficult to overcome a polarization between, on the one hand, the essentially theoretical and deductive approaches which have dominated economic thought since the 18th century and, on the other hand, later approaches, where field investigation and manipulation statistical data was done without or with a certain mistrust of economic theory. We examine in a brief and didactic way the main lines of the debates on this "connection" between economic theory and statistics.
