French Abstract:La force donnée à la théorie économique par les technologies numériques et les mathématiques aboutit, à la fin des années 1940, à une reconfiguration épistémologique au sein de la discipline : c’est la méthodologie hypothético-déductive des économistes théoriciens qui tient, dorénavant, le haut du pavé, et plus particulièrement l’économie mathématique. En dotant le courant dominant d’une méthodologie spécifique, le tournant épistémologique des années 1940-1950 n’évacue pas pour autant la tension fondamentale entre Théorie et Observation dans la discipline, où la question de la justification et de la légitimité est posée de manière continue. Nous revenons ici sur l’épisode central de cette reconfiguration, celui de la controverse de la « mesure sans théorie », et sur la manière dont Leontief y a contribué.

English Abstract:The strength given to economic theory by numerical technologies and mathematics led, at the end of the 1940s, to an epistemological reset within the discipline: it was the hypothetico-deductive methodology of theoretical economists which henceforth held the upper hand, and mathematical economics in particular. By endowing the mainstream with a specific methodology, the epistemological turn of the 1940s and 1950s did not, however, eliminate the fundamental tension between Theory and Observation in the discipline, where the question of justification and legitimacy was still raised. We return here to the central episode of this reconfiguration, that of the controversy of the "measurement without theory", and to the way in which Leontief contributed to it.
