Abstract

This short essay criticizes the "stealing first base" rule with which the independent Atlantic League experimented in 2019. Without mincing words, this rule was and remains a terrible idea. It has no precedent or analogue in existing rules. It is inconsistent with baseball’s under- lying structure. And it will create confusion for everyone, to the disadvantage of the defense. My hope is the league does not retain the rule and it remains a half-season historical footnote.
