Abstract
Management of Municipal Solid Wastes is a serious environmental and health problem which is faced in major cities all over the world. Waste management studies of municipalities will help identify the lacunae and loopholes in solid waste management and thus help to minimize generation of solid wastes and pollution. In this regard, a waste management study was carried out for Attingal Municipality, Thiruvananthapuram District, through field visits and data collection from the Municipality. The study was concentrated to investigate the present status of the solid waste management, to quantity the wastes generated in the Municipality and to suggest remedial measures for improvement. Design of sanitary landfill was done based on the quantity of wastes generated and population growth of the Municipality. A sanitary landfill of length 52m and breadth 26m was designed for a period of 10 years. The design also included liner system, final cover system, leachate collection and treatment facility and environmental monitoring system.
