Abstract

Scant research has investigated the relationship between campaign finance and candidate gender in gubernatorial races. Candidate ethnorace has also been neglected. We therefore explore the race and gender backgrounds of those candidates who enter open-seat primaries and evaluate their overall campaign receipts and the structure of their receipts. In doing so, we contribute to the gender and race literatures by evaluating how campaign finance affects the opportunities of diverse gubernatorial candidates.

Keywords: campaign finance, state politics, elections, gender, race
