Abstract

The paper is mostly translated from French, and was constructed by Eric Schwarz for a website in which he changes the name of his Interfaculty Centre for Systemic Studies to Autogenesis (the concept he promoted). The paper supports the rationale for a learning centre for systems science. Within the context of viable living systems it also discusses the relationship between the concept of autopoiesis (self-production) and its relationship to Schwarz’ concept autogenesis. It is explained in the preamble that while autopoiesis is a necessary condition for viability, it is insufficient, requiring the sufficient condition of Autogenesis (self-creation). This essay begins by discussing the nature of systems, and them moving on to its philosophical foundations.

Keywords: viable systems, living systems, autopoiesis, autogenesis, systems science, philosophy
