Abstract

This brief paper explains how a ‘technical practice’ works. It sets out the elements of a practice: the self, the skill, the desired product, and the enabling context of the enclosed technical common. The paper seeks to ground power associated with technical practice in social relationships and values. The paper distinguishes first-order powers (human potencies), second-order powers (capabilities), and third-order powers (Cartesian mechanism).
